From now, it will be very difficult if not impossible to find a sailing boat to get a lift from an island to another. However, there is boat trips organised by companies. I contacted Wanua adventures and they are keen to take me on board with my bicycle for no extra fees! They use a sail to help the engine but most of the journey will be on the engine.
Wanua adventures offers a 3 days 3 nights trip from Labuan Bajo, on Flores island to Labuan Lombok on Lombok island with a couple of stops on the way in Komodos islands then … islands.
I spent my last night on Flores with Sabine a french SQL developer who quit her job a few months ago and decided to discover the world. Good on her! She is at the same backpackers than I and we went to the fish market with a whole team of french scuba divers. Before that I wanted to take photographs of the sunset. Here is one of the pictures I took that night.
Not sure of what I want
I’ve been to Wanua adventure office to discuss about price and availability. They offered me a very good deal if I decide to leave in the morning. In the other hand there is great stuffs to discover here in Labuan Bajo. A canyon with waterfall and a cave with crystal clear blue water. I took ages to take my decision but my budget will decide for me. I will take the boat and get the very interesting deal.
I finally took my decision
7.30am I was ready to go. A young guy leaded me to the boat, we loaded up the bike onboard and there I was. Ready to go. I usually don’t really like to use all organised tourist stuffs but I have to admit it was a cool trip!
Being super lazy
After cycling from Ende to Labuan Bajo, I was super tired and this boat trip was perfect to recover. I alternated snorkelling, eating sleeping for three days and it was perfect.
There is some pictures I took on the way.
1st Stop: Komodos National Park
The first day was hectic, we’ve been to visit Komodo National park where you can see Komodo dragons. They are huge but still, we were with rangers armed with long wood sticks to keep them away. They were looking super lazy… nothing like seeing them into the “real” wild but a cool first introduction.
We stopped on two islands:
- Rinca Island where we walked for 30 minutes to a lookout pretty cool! WE saw our first dragons but most of them were staying under the kitchen of the rangers. Even if they say they don’t feed them, they still are hanging around.
- Komodo Island where we made a 5km walk, more interesting with, one more time, beautiful sceneries.
I would have loved to visit Pulau Padar island but it’s not on the program. It means I will have to come back. And next time I will have a drone because there is heaps of amazing stuffs to record from the sky.
At the end of the first day we anchored in a bay by Kalong Island, we all had a swim, made some jumps from the deck and had fun until the sun was gone.
2nd day: Manta Point
We staretd the day with Pink Beach. Well it’s not very pink except when the waves come over the sand. but the view from there is awesome! Then we went to Manta point to swim with Manta rays. I’m very bad to spot them even if they are huge. I finally saw one just before to go back on the boat.
3rd day: Satonda island
It’s an island with a huge lake were you can swim it’s still salt water tho. after that we went to the waterfall on Moyo Island. It’s a great place with tree from where you can jump in the water. Awesome! Then we spent the rest of the day and the night going to Labuan Lombok where we arrived in the middle of the night. We slept there, in the morning we had breakfast on board then, while everyone took a bus ride included in the trip to the west side of Lombok, I started pedalling to find a hotel.
Lombok
I never found any hotel in Labuan Lombok so I decided to start my trip to the west side of the island as well. I spotted a hotel 40km further, it looks good. I will aim for that. No hotel here. Ok, I find a homestay 20 more kilometers away, I will try. The homestay is ok! I can rest for the rest of the day and the next day I rented a scooter to reach Senaru and hike up this awesome volcano. This is another story, it will be my next post so stay tuned!
